Having been born in a tiny little village in the middle of no-where of rural KwaZulu Natal, growing up in Richmond which is a small farming community with a population of maybe 5000 people life was rather pleasant and I lived in my happy little country bubble.
My Primary school had a sum total of 250 students which caused some shock when I went off to Boarding School in Pietermaritzburg where there were 250 students per grade!
5 of the best years of my life were spent at Boarding School and I made some life-long friends and have some amazing memories with my “girls”. Memories of toothpasting, VC’s, Late Suppers, Early Risings and the joys of hostel food.
It was also at highschool were I got the name, Skwirlybird, and has pretty much stuck ever since. My high-school friends have now spread out all over the world but they are still and always will be, very loved.
After school I tried my hand at studying, and working, and then studying again, before doing the work and study thing and finally getting a qualification in Early Childhood Development. My heart is always happy when I spend time with children and am doing something creative.
It was during this time that I met my now husband, Chris, who is the most amazing person and I’m so grateful to have met him and to have him in my life.
After we got engaged, we made the grand trek inland together and now call the bustling metropolitan of Johannesburg “home sweet home”. We are fortunate to live in a quite inner city suburban neighborhood and not have to deal with hours and hours of JHB traffic.
I’m pretty much a ‘jack of all trades’ and I’m now (trying to) fulfill my passion of …..well I haven’t quite figured that one out yet. I’m an avid foodie, coffee lover and wine enthusiast, yogi, amateur photographer and now newbie blogger. This skwirlybird is an aspiring creative and I have big dreams. I still have a lot to learn and do and experience. I love being a wife and marriage has taught me so much, we’ve only been married for just over 1 year, but boy, it’s been an absolute roller coaster, with Chris having major surgery and us both changing jobs and moving and and and…
The other love of my life is our furbaby ‘Nunu’. She choose us as her new parents shortly after we moved to Jozi and decided Chris’s head was a great place to sleep at 3am in the morning…
I love being mommy to our Nunu Kidden even though she can be a darn right pain in the butt sometimes, as a whole, she’s the best furchild in the whole wide world. Nunu can be found on Instagram under the hashtag #nunu_hamlyn (some one stole her other #lifewithnunu !!!!)
